Backchannel vs Clari Copilot

Most of this category only looks at calls after they end. Clari Copilot is one of the few that genuinely helps while you are still talking, and that makes it the fairest comparison we have. The difference is where it runs and where the help comes from: prepared battlecards from Clari's cloud, or a response generated on your own machine from the objection that was actually just raised.

Why switch

Why people look for a Clari Copilot alternative

Clari Copilot is well liked -- 4.7 out of 5 across 314 Capterra reviews as of July 2026, with the best ease-of-use score in its category. The complaints that send people searching are specific and consistent.

Transcription accuracy

The most frequent complaint by volume. Reviewers write that "the call transcription is quite poor to be honest" and that "it doesn't always recognise the right person on the call as speaking." Non-native speakers are a named failure mode.

The bot is hard to get rid of

The sharpest review quote in this whole category: "Wish it was faster to kick off Wingman from a call when a customer doesn't want to be recorded." Others report the recorder "pops at random times during calls and becomes a bit of a distraction."

The bot does not always show up

Reviewers report that "sometimes it doesn't join the meetings and you need to add it manually," and that "sometimes, even if you add them manually it still doesn't join." Recording depends on a participant that has to arrive on time.

Per seat, per year, in someone else's cloud

List pricing runs $1,080 to $1,320 per user per year as of July 2026, and all audio and transcripts live in Clari's cloud. There is no self-hosted option.

The comparison

Credit where it is due: Clari Copilot is actually in the call

Almost every product in revenue intelligence analyzes conversations after they finish. Clari Copilot is one of the few exceptions. Clari's product page markets "real-time transcription, instant insights, and live battlecards," and its customer documentation describes Copilot joining sales calls and showing "cues based on what's being said during the conversation," along with long monologue alerts to help you course-correct while you are still on the call. Clari also claims its real-time battlecards lift win rates. That is their figure, from their own data, and we have no way to check it -- but the capability is real and it is the same problem Backchannel set out to solve.

Backchannel solves it differently. Nothing joins your meeting: the app captures your microphone and, optionally, tab or system audio directly in the browser, so Zoom, Google Meet, and Teams need no bot and no integration. Voice activity detection and speaker diarization run locally on your own hardware. Then nine seeded agents go to work, five of them live, and the one that matters here is the objection handler: every 10 seconds it takes the last 90 seconds of transcript and returns both a reply you could say in the next ten seconds and the underlying concern behind the objection, with the strategic angle to work toward later in the call.

One note on fairness. We are not going to characterize exactly how Clari matches a battlecard to what is being said, because we could not verify the current mechanism on a Clari page we trust. What we can compare is the shape of the two products: a library of cards prepared ahead of time, versus a response written from what just happened. Both are legitimate designs and they fail in opposite directions.

The differences that actually matter

Generated, not retrieved

This is the whole argument. Backchannel's objection handler sends the trailing 90 seconds of real transcript to a low-latency model along with your meeting context, the speaker roster, your call directives, and a do-not-repeat list of objections it already raised. It returns an immediate response for the next ten seconds and names the concern underneath -- cost justification, risk aversion, change fatigue, a competing priority, a missing stakeholder, a past failure -- plus the angle to work toward later. A prepared card cannot do that, because it was written before your prospect said anything. The honest counterpoint: a curated card is deterministic and approved by your enablement team, and a generated response is neither. If you need every word a rep sees to have been signed off in advance, that is a real reason to prefer a card library.

Real-time objection help is table stakes now. Mechanism is the question.

Clari is no longer alone. Zoom took Sales Assist to general availability on 22 July 2026 inside Zoom Revenue Accelerator, surfacing "competitive intelligence, objection guidance, discovery prompts, battlecards, and configurable framework capture in real time" at $66 per user per month for Essentials and $99.99 for Premium, billed annually -- though it is tied to Zoom licensing, and Zoom's own documentation has an admin configure the talking points for each topic ahead of time. The category has settled on prepared content delivered live. Backchannel is the odd one out because it writes the answer instead of looking it up, and because it does that on your machine rather than on a vendor's.

Nothing to admit, nothing to eject

Every product in this category puts a recorder in the participant list, which means the consent decision happens before the call starts. When it needs to change mid-call, it goes badly -- hence that reviewer wishing it were faster to remove Wingman when a customer objects to being recorded. Backchannel captures from a browser tab on your side of the call. There is nothing in the participant list, nothing to admit from a waiting room, and nothing to remove.

Nine agents, and you own all of them

Backchannel seeds nine agents: an audio gateway for interim transcription, five live insight agents (a consolidated analyst on a 40-second cycle, the objection handler every 10 seconds, a synthesizer on a 75-second cooldown, an opportunity specialist on a 55-second cooldown matching openings against your own catalog, and strategic signals every 45 seconds), and a three-agent briefing pass after the call. Every agent's model, prompt, and trigger is editable, and you route them to Gemini or OpenAI on your own keys.

What we do not have

Backchannel is not a revenue intelligence platform. No CRM sync, no pipeline or forecast, no scorecards, no call library, no team analytics, and no user accounts, roles, or authentication of any kind -- the application has no user model, so there is no manager view and no way to roll a team up. Our Privacy First mode is also not a free lunch: the local transcription models cannot do text analysis, so turning it on gives you fully local transcription and diarization and switches off every live agent, objection handler included. The practical middle setting is local transcription with the interim audio gateway disabled, which keeps audio on your machine while transcript text goes to Gemini or OpenAI on your own key.

Who should use which

Stay with Clari Copilot if you...

Need objections and next steps written back to CRM, want buyer signals feeding Clari forecasting and pipeline inspection, run enablement through Gametapes and Playbooks, require SSO and SAML and compliance attestations, and want your enablement team to control exactly what a rep sees on screen.

Switch to Backchannel if you...

Take external calls where a recording bot is a liability, want the objection response written from what was actually said rather than pulled from a library, want audio to stay on hardware you control, are tired of per-seat pricing, and can run docker compose or a desktop build.

What moving over looks like

Setup is a git clone and docker compose up --build plus a Gemini or OpenAI API key, or a desktop build for Windows, macOS, or Linux. If you want transcription offline, point it at a local ONNX Whisper or Parakeet model instead. The quickstart is upfront about the friction: the first start builds images and downloads models, so plan for a few minutes rather than seconds.

Past meetings can be imported as transcripts (.txt, .md, .docx) or audio (.mp3, .m4a, .wav, .ogg, .flac) and analyzed after the fact. There is no automated Clari Copilot export migration tool. One more thing worth knowing before you compare roadmaps: Clari and Salesloft completed a merger announced in December 2025, with Steve Cox as chief executive of the combined organization, so confirm the current product lineup with Clari directly.

Common questions

Does Clari Copilot help during the call or after it?

During, which is why this is a real comparison rather than a category mismatch. Clari markets real-time transcription and live battlecards on its Copilot product page, and its customer documentation says Copilot joins sales calls and shows you cues based on what is being said during the conversation, plus long monologue alerts. Most of this category only analyzes calls after they end. Clari Copilot does not, and neither does Backchannel.

How is Backchannel's objection handling different from battlecards?

Backchannel generates the response rather than retrieving a card. Every 10 seconds it sends the last 90 seconds of transcript to a fast model and gets back two things: a reply you could say in the next ten seconds, and the underlying concern behind the objection with the strategic angle to work toward later in the call. A battlecard library is content prepared in advance. The honest trade is that prepared cards are deterministic and enablement-approved, and a generated response is neither.

What does Clari Copilot cost compared to Backchannel?

Clari does not publish prices on its own site. Capterra lists Clari Copilot at $1,080 per user per year for Accelerator and $1,320 per user per year for Enterprise, as of July 2026, with a free trial and no free version. Backchannel is MIT-licensed and costs nothing beyond your own hardware and whatever Gemini or OpenAI API usage you choose.

What does Clari Copilot do better than Backchannel?

A great deal. CRM auto-capture of intent, objections, contacts and next steps; buyer signals feeding forecasting and pipeline inspection; Gametapes and Playbooks for call libraries and enablement; SSO and SAML; mobile; and published compliance attestations including SOC 2 Type II and ISO 27001. Backchannel has none of that and no user accounts at all. Note also that Clari and Salesloft completed a merger announced in December 2025, so confirm the current product lineup before you buy.
